Flavor for Mixed Media Experiments

On the One Little House ning group, Jeanette is currently working a a project from Mary Beth Shaw's book "Flavor for Mixed Media. I bought this book about a year ago, and as all of us often do put it on my bookshelf. I decided to take it off the shelf, and actually work my way through the book. So here are the results of my efforts.
First-I had never made any collagraph plates before

Next was an experiment applying molding paste, then acrylic paint and gold foil on top of that.

(You will see parts of these in some later pieces)

An organic abstract (not really an abstract person, but it was fun to try this

Rubbings from items around the house. I found that the simpler the design, the better is shows up when painted over

Applying gold foil to a background surface and painting over and using glass beads.

Alcohol inks on plexiglass with a foil backing. This piece also has gold gesso applied to the wood, then acrylic paint over and lifted off with stamps.

Next up-using corrugated cardboard for a substrate and peeling back parts

And finally, using clayboard and scratching the surface with various instruments, then adding paint, glass beads, and inks.

I really enjoyed actually trying these different techniques, rather than just looking at them in the book!!

Oh Janet, each and everyone is a delight to look at. You have a lot going oh here and so enjoyable with the colors and designs. Now I wonder why is it that we buy the books really really want them and then look at them and then to the book shelf. I am glad to know someone else does it. I bet we will see more of the great images in your work to come. xoxo

it is fun to play with techniques. I refuse to buy anymore materials for surface techniques.

I love working with stencils. They add such wonderful shapes and exactness to our art.

Good for you. It looks like you had a lot of fun. Your artwork is inspiring. I don't know which I'm worse at: taking on-line classes....or buying technique books... and then not creating art from what I learned. Of well, even if they are only "eye candy" it is a pleasure to see others creativity....just like yours!

I'm sure we all buy books and put them on bookshelves. I do that with cookbooks too... But look at what you achieved! All those amazing textures and colors! So yummy! Very inspiring!
