Charmed by Chagall

Continuing on with reading about, looking at and being inspired by the masters, this time I have chosen Marc Chagall. In my large journal, I take a few notes and make small copies of Chagall's paintings-I also carved 3 stamps.

Chagall did many paintings of a fiddler-often standing on rooftops. I made a pocket in my journal for him to go into-the chicken and the cow head are stamps I carved.
I like to practice with different art supplies, so the woman with the flowers is oil pastels; the girl on the horse is WC crayons and the girl on the chicken, acrylics.
This is a larger piece and I named it "Siren's Song" Chagall made a poster for Nice, France with a floating mermaid and that inspired my rendition.
And this one is on a long narrow canvas, with lots of background texture and was inspired by many of the floating couples paintings that Chagall made.

Thank you.

I like the dimensional complexity of the fiddler piece. It speaks to me of the layers of life, trauma, drama and impermanence. Great use of color to accentuate the point of view. Your art speaks from your soul.

What a great idea to not only study the masters but to record your responses to these masters with your own inspired art. I like that you did four pieces on one page but used different mediums for each one.
