Because Art Should be Play and Not Work

Friday, January 24, 2014

We are facing some health challenges at our house, so thank goodness I have art as a way to escape if only for a little while. I am taking a class called "Studying Under the Masters" and the first master up was Matisse. One of our challenges was to set up a still life in the style of Matisse. Here is the one that I set up.(And yes, my studio is red-orange like Matisse). Following is my attempt at painting something realistic and a still life (both of which are just not what I do normally). We were to apply ideas that we had learned from studying Matisse. i took some artistic license (changed a few colors) and I hate the flowers, but I like the rest of it.
Last year I did a little study of Matisse on my own and copied his "Woman in a hat" with oil pastels
and I also made a collage.

love of course the work and the orange walls. Awesome. I have found that art heals, we went thru something 3 years ago now and art does heal. Thank goodness and y'all are so strong. xoxoxoxoxox

I'm taking that class, too, Janet. So far - enjoying it. Learned a lot about Matisse and love the patterns he mixes up. Junelle's was awesome with Gaudi's work. Love the stained-glass windows!

Love what you're doing - great results and your pastel work is beautiful, too, with the Lady in the Hat!

I do hope health issues can be taken care of quickly. Thoughts of you. xo

These are wonderful! Thanks for stopping by my blog and letting me know you're in the class, too. I added you to my feedly so I can follow along. I do think I'll give it a go at painting my still life. I haven't joined the facebook page but I want to because I'm interested to see what others are doing in the class.

I love how you interpreted your still life and your older Matisse pieces too. I have heard of this class.

I hope the health problems in your household will not be around long.
