Because Art Should be Play and Not Work

Finishing up with Matisse-letting go of preconceived ideas

"Red robe: Violet tulips". Copy of Matisse's painting of the same name. My favorite Matisse paintings are of his women dressed in the different costumes. That would make sense, since I started out as a fiber artist.
"Woman in an embroidered blouse". Copy of one in a series of drawings of woman in embroidered blouse.
And I titled this collage "Matisse and the Modern Girl". This started out as a disaster-the collaged pieces wouldn't stick, they were full of wrinkles etc etc. I was ready to throw it against the wall! I had a preconceived notion of how it should look. The next day I added paint and it was just the pits. At that point I was really ready to chuck it, but being a double Taurus, I don't give up easily! I finally just decided "to hell with it" that I was just going to scribble and paint and use my neon crayons and the more I let go of it looking a certain way, the more I was liking it. Now, still not my favorite art I have ever created, but I can live with it.

Your final image is testament to not giving up. I think it looks great now - the colours and patterns are wonderful

There sure is a lesson in this post. May not be your favorite but it will be memorable.

Despite not being a double Taurus, whatever that is, I frequently have the same reaction, after all it is not for the National gallery, is usually my thought. they are very Janet with a nod to Matisse and i love that collage.

Well my fellow Taurus I am so glad you stuck with it on the final piece. Funny how the ones that give you so much trouble are usually your favorites. Bravo on them all. Keep warm my dear and love the creations. xoxoxoox

I so agree with you! Sometimes we have to push through a piece we don't like in order to come up with something that surprises us. I just adore your work here - I love how your painted piece really reflects your collage page as well. Bravo, xo
